چکیده

Static palatography has been widely used to investigate consonant articulation. The method is based on the observation of the tongue print (a black paste is spread on the tongue before the production) either directly onto the palate (direct palatography) or onto a pseudo palate (indirect palatography). This study has two main objectives. The first one is to provide an automatic analysis of the tongue print characteristic (size, shape, position onto the palate,...) in order to allow an objective description of the linguopalatal contact. The second one concerns the shape of the palate. Indeed, a simple picture (2D) analysis does not take into account the shape (3D) of the palate vault. To alleviate this 2D limitation, we propose a method based on the use of structured light which enables the computation of the palate shape.

Prospects of Epg and Opg Sensor Fusion in Pursuit of a 3d Real-time Representation of the Oral Cavity

After giving a brief review of the underlying technologies electro-palatography and optical palatography, this paper presents the prototype of a device that combines electrical and optical palatographic measurements to reconstruct the tongue surface during articulation in real-time. The prototype consists of a mouth piece (pseudo-palate) and a control board, and improves on a previous design by...

Comparing palatography patterns of Estonian consonants across time

The few known palatographic studies on Estonian consonants date back to the 1970s, and no research in articulatory phonetics has been practised throughout the following four decades. Recently, the Estonian EPG corpus was recorded using a contemporary EPG system. In the paper we introduce first results on contemporary palatography patterns of Estonian sonorants and compare these to results from ...

Super-imposing maxillary and palatal locations for electroarticulometry: A SIMPLE method.

This study proposes a method of superimposing a physical palatal profile, extracted from a speaker's maxillary impression, onto real-time mid-sagittal articulatory data. A palatal/dental profile is first obtained by three-dimensional-scanning the maxillary impression of the speaker. Then a high resolution mid-sagittal palatal line, extracted from the profile, is sub-divided into articulatory zo...

Articulatory Coordination in Nama Click Consonants

Nama (a variety of Khoekhoegowab), is a Khoe (Khoisan) language of Namibia. Nama uses an extensive segmental inventory, including click consonants contrasting in four places and five manners of articulation [1]. Click production in Khoisan languages has been examined using palatography [2, 3, 4], Xray [4], and ultrasound [5, 6]; however, the phonetic characterization of different clicks produce...

Nepalese retroflex stops: a static palatography study of inter- and intra-speaker variability

Retroflex sounds are classically defined as produced with the tongue tip curled backward and often in contact behind the alveolar ridge ([1], [2], [3]). The sounds, however, present a great inter-language, interand intra-speaker articulatory variation. Retroflex stops in Nepali, an Indo-Aryan language spoken in Nepal, are produced with the tongue tip with no backward curling movement at the alv...
